Autauga County Receives $432,000 EDA Grant for Strategic I-65/U.S. 31 Corridor Economic Development Study
AUTAUGA COUNTY, Ala. – Autauga County, in partnership with the Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission (CARPDC), has been awarded a $432,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) through the agency's Fiscal Year 2025 Disaster Supplemental Grant Program. The funding will support a comprehensive economic development analysis of the Interstate 65/U.S. Highway 31 Interchange Corridor, one of the county's most strategically important transportation and growth corridors.
The study will evaluate current economic conditions, infrastructure capacity, land use patterns, workforce assets, transportation connectivity, and future development opportunities along the corridor. The analysis will provide local and regional leaders with data-driven recommendations to guide economic development investments, strengthen community resilience, and capitalize on future growth opportunities.
"This award represents a significant investment in Autauga County's future," said Jay Thompson, Chairman of the Autauga County Commission. "The I-65/U.S. 31 Interchange Corridor is a critical economic gateway for our county and central Alabama. This planning effort will help us better understand how to position the corridor for sustainable growth, attract new investment, support existing businesses, and improve quality of life for our residents."
The EDA Disaster Supplemental Grant Program is designed to help communities strengthen economic resilience and advance recovery and preparedness efforts through strategic planning and infrastructure investments. Through this grant, Autauga County and CARPDC will examine opportunities to improve economic competitiveness while addressing risks and vulnerabilities that could affect future development and long-term prosperity.
The analysis is expected to include extensive stakeholder engagement with local governments, businesses, industry leaders, economic development organizations, transportation agencies, educational institutions, and community representatives. Public input will play an important role in shaping recommendations and identifying priority projects and initiatives.
"The Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission is proud to partner with Autauga County on this important initiative," said Greg Clark, Executive Director of CARPDC. "This study will provide a comprehensive roadmap for leveraging the economic potential of one of the region's most valuable transportation corridors. The resulting strategy will help local leaders make informed decisions that enhance economic resilience, support workforce development, and create opportunities for future investment."
The I-65/U.S. 31 Interchange Corridor serves as a major transportation route connecting Autauga County to regional markets throughout Alabama and the southeastern United States. As
population and economic activity continue to grow across the region, the corridor presents significant opportunities for industrial, commercial, logistics, and workforce-related development.
Upon completion, the Comprehensive Economic Development Analysis will identify strategies and implementation priorities designed to support economic growth, infrastructure planning, disaster resilience, and regional competitiveness for years to come. Additional information regarding the project schedule and public engagement opportunities will be announced as the study moves forward.
